Buying An HD Video Camcorder

Many people have already made the transition from regular TV to High-Definition TV due to its impeccable resolution and crystal clear display. An HD video camcorder is among the items that are more commonly being offered in HD and it may be worth the switch if you are already an avid HD user at home.

Of course the most obvious reason to purchase an HD camcorder is because you can begin shoot videos and even pictures with quality and resolution similar to that of a professional. Although HD digital camcorders are a bit more expensive than older versions it can be worth the extra money for many reasons. Videos can be shot in resolutions of 720p, 1080i and possibly 1080p if you can find it.

This means your picture quality will be much crisper and clearer. Although 1080i offers higher resolution a “p” is better for shooting video. In this case, 720p may be a better option over the 1080i. There aren’t many camcorders with 1080p recording available yet but this would be your best choice ultimately. Furthermore, with HD you can record in a wider range of colors making your videos more true-to-life.

Recording formats also vary depending on the brand HD digital camcorder you choose. AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) is now the most common and was introduced several years ago. HDV is common with MiniDV but this format is beginning to get phased out and it can be a little more difficult to transfer data. Mpeg-2 is another format that is available but is rather new and only available in a few models.

Just like other digital HD camcorders you also have many different media formats to choose from for saving and recording your data to. Media formats available are hard drive, Mini DVD, MiniDV and SD or flash memory. SD card format is rather inexpensive and makes it easier to transfer and watch your videos because of availability of slots on televisions and computers now.

Hard drive camcorders saves the data right onto and internal hard drive and you must transfer the data from the digital camcorder to a computer or watch when connected to a television. Mini DVD’s are a reliable format because they can be played in most DVD players but they don’t hold as much as other formats. MiniDV stores data onto mini “tapes” that need to be transferred to a computer. One important thing to consider when choosing which media format to go with is the fact that you will want the best quality since you will be recording in high definition. The purchase of a blu-ray player may be necessary for those that will transfer and burn onto DVD for home viewing.

HD digital video camcorders are a good investment considering most other formats are getting phased out and could soon be obsolete. Switching to HD now will ensure that your movies will be compatible with future technologies. Not to mention, with exceptionally clear home videos you couldn’t be closer to professional quality than a high definition camcorder. My suggestion if you are in the market to buy one is to get online and look at blogs and review sites to compare HD digital camcorder reviews to see which one suits you both financially and electronically.
